FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  April 1, 2026

Neighborhood Engagement Hub to Welcome Flint Residents for Open House and Community Toolshed Season Opening

April 20 event will spotlight neighborhood resources, resident support services, and the return of one of Flint’s most practical community assets

FLINT, Mich. — The Neighborhood Engagement Hub will open its doors to the community on Sunday, April 20, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for its NEH Open House + Toolshed Season Opening at 3216 M L King Ave., Flint, MI 48505.

The event will give residents, neighborhood leaders, community partners, and supporters an opportunity to tour the facility, meet the NEH team and board, learn more about NEH programming, and get connected to the resources the organization makes available to help strengthen neighborhoods across Flint.

Since its founding in 2014, the Neighborhood Engagement Hub has served as a community development organization focused on helping Flint neighborhoods build capacity, access support, and carry forward resident-led change. Today, NEH says it works with more than 30 neighborhood groups and community organizations across the city by providing neighborhood project support, printing and copy services, fiduciary grant management, Community Toolshed and mobile event kit access, and collaborative trainings and workshops with community partners. Its mission is to serve as a catalyst for positive neighborhood change by supporting neighborhoods to become safe, healthy, and whole.

At the center of the April 20 event is the reopening and celebration of NEH’s Community Toolshed, a practical and deeply neighborhood-centered resource that helps remove one of the most common barriers to community upkeep: access to equipment. According to NEH, the toolshed operates from April through October, Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and offers Flint residents free use of outdoor landscaping, maintenance, and gardening equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, rototillers, and hand tools. The program also includes access to select community event equipment, such as folding tables, chairs, canopy tents, generators, lawn games, a PA system, and a popcorn machine for eligible community events.

For many residents and neighborhood groups, that access can be the difference between wanting to improve a space and being able to do it. In a city where block-by-block care often depends on neighbors stepping in to maintain vacant lots, support elders, tend gardens, or prepare outdoor gathering spaces, the toolshed represents more than inventory. It is infrastructure for local action. Public descriptions of NEH’s work have long framed the toolshed as an essential support for blight elimination, exterior maintenance, and neighborhood-led beautification throughout Flint.

“The Community Toolshed reflects something we believe deeply at NEH: neighborhoods should not be held back by a lack of access,” said Tom Wyatt, Executive Director of the Neighborhood Engagement Hub. “When residents have the right tools, information, and support, they are better positioned to care for their blocks, respond to local needs, and create visible change in the places they live. This open house is an opportunity for people to see what is available to them, connect with our team, and be reminded that neighborhood improvement is still powerful, still possible, and still worth investing in.”

In addition to information about the toolshed, the open house will offer a broader introduction to NEH’s work and role in the community. Guests will be able to learn more about the organization’s programs and services, ask questions, and explore ways to connect with its ongoing neighborhood support efforts. Food trucks and fun activities are also planned as part of the event.

Whether attendees are longtime neighborhood advocates, residents looking for support, or community members simply wanting to better understand what NEH offers, the organization hopes the event will serve as both a welcome and an invitation.

RSVP is preferred, but not required.

Neighborhood Engagement Hub Invites Community Partners to Co-Create Events That Benefit Flint Neighborhoods

FLINT, Mich. — The Neighborhood Engagement Hub (NEH) is now actively seeking community partners to co-create workshops, training sessions, presentations, meetups, and other events designed to benefit Flint neighborhoods and residents.

This effort reflects NEH’s continued commitment to supporting community-driven engagement, neighborhood capacity building, and collaborative opportunities that strengthen Flint. By inviting partners to help shape meaningful programming, NEH aims to foster events that inform, connect, and empower residents while advancing positive neighborhood change across the city.

Organizations interested in partnering with NEH are encouraged to carefully review all form questions before applying. NEH notes that the application includes eligibility questions that may affect whether an organization should move forward with the form.

Through this collaborative events process, NEH is looking to work alongside organizations whose values and event goals align with its mission and standards for community-centered engagement.

“Collaboration is essential to building stronger neighborhoods,” said the NEH team. “We are excited to partner with organizations that want to create meaningful experiences, share resources, and provide opportunities that directly benefit Flint residents.”

NEH has also outlined important guidelines for prospective partners. The organization reserves the right to deny or cancel events that conflict with its internal standards. NEH does not permit events that promote discrimination, harm, or exclusion. In addition, personal or private events such as birthdays, graduations, and open houses are strictly prohibited through this opportunity.

Organizations that are not seeking a collaborative event and are only interested in using the NEH building as a venue for an event organized solely by their organization should instead inquire about building usage by filling out this form or emailing info@nehflint.org.

This new call for collaborative events is part of NEH’s broader work to support neighborhoods through shared learning, partnership, and practical community development resources.

Neighborhood Engagement Hub Launches New Community Advisory Group in 2026

FLINT, Mich. — The Neighborhood Engagement Hub (NEH) is excited to announce the establishment of its new Community Advisory Group in 2026, creating an opportunity for deeper community voice, stronger collaboration, and shared guidance as the organization continues its work to support neighborhoods across Flint.

Since its founding in 2014, the Neighborhood Engagement Hub has been rooted in the vision of Flint residents who called for a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting neighborhood groups and strengthening community-based development efforts. What began as a response to resident leadership has continued to grow into a citywide commitment to neighborhood capacity building, training, technical assistance, and community partnership.

In 2022, NEH re-examined its mission, programming, identity, and operations. Through that process, the organization adopted a renewed mission statement, identified core values, and clarified its areas of focus. Today, NEH operates as a nonprofit community development corporation serving the entirety of Flint.

The creation of the Community Advisory Group marks an important next step in that evolution. The group is being formed to help strengthen resident and community engagement, provide valuable feedback, and support NEH’s efforts to remain aligned with the needs, priorities, and hopes of Flint neighborhoods.

“The Neighborhood Engagement Hub was created because residents saw the need for stronger support for neighborhoods in Flint,” said the NEH team. “Establishing this Community Advisory Group is one more way we are honoring that foundation by creating space for community voice, insight, and leadership to help shape the future of our work.”

NEH currently works with more than 30 neighborhood groups and community organizations throughout Flint. Its support includes neighborhood project planning and implementation, printing and copying services, access to the Community Toolshed and mobile event kit, fiduciary grant management, and collaborative workshops and trainings with community partners.

NEH’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for positive neighborhood change by supporting neighborhoods to become safe, healthy, and whole.

Grounded in its vision for stronger neighborhoods, NEH continues to center its work around the values of:

Strengthening Neighborhoods and Groups + Complete Neighborhoods + Building Local Wealth = Strong Neighborhoods

Public Statement | December 24, 2025

Over the past several weeks, the Neighborhood Engagement Hub (NEH) has conducted a focused review of our operational standards, accountability practices, and project oversight—particularly for ARPA-funded initiatives intended to support neighborhood improvement.

As part of this review, NEH evaluated ARPA-funded projects under our administrative oversight. During this process, we reviewed a First Ward ARPA-funded blight elimination project intended to reduce blight and support repairs for properties in need. Following internal assessment and outreach to all involved parties, NEH was unable to verify full project completion, required documentation, and confirmation of work consistent with NEH’s standards of excellence. Multiple attempts were made to obtain the necessary verification.

While the project followed applicable ARPA funding guidelines at the time of approval, NEH remains committed to accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of public resources. Based on the results of this review and the inability to confirm fulfillment, NEH made the decision to terminate the project.

This process reinforced the importance of continued improvement and the need to add measures above standard project requirements to strengthen how we operate. In response, NEH has been actively updating and strengthening internal processes, including enhanced project requirements, increased documentation and verification protocols, and updates to our standard operating procedures. These actions are being implemented to ensure greater consistency, clarity, and accountability moving forward.

Our mission remains unchanged: to serve as a catalyst for positive neighborhood change by supporting communities in becoming safe, healthy, and whole. As we continue this work, NEH is committed to maintaining the trust of our residents and partners through both our mission and the integrity of our operations. We look forward to growing alongside our community and continuing this work with renewed focus and strengthened systems in the year ahead.

NEH will continue reviewing project oversight practices to ensure ARPA-funded work is verifiable, documented, and aligned with intended community outcomes.
